An exciting new year of WCTU Activities
for 2017

CALENDAR |STATE| UNIONS: HIGHLAND PARK |IMPERIAL VALLEY| PASADENA | PETERSON | SAN DIEGO CO. | ORANGE CO. | BEERSHEBA, TN |

The Woman's Christian Temperance Union believes that young people should be aware of the problems involved in the use of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and illegal drugs. To encourage and promote research into the effects of these substances as they relate to the health and happiness of the individual, the protection of the home, safety crime and violence, college students are invited to compete in the State and National Intercollegiate Oratorical Contests sponsored by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.

 September 21, 2016

“To Westmorland City Council:

My name is Linda Hamby and I am here representing Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) of Imperial Valley of which I am the president; Westmorland Basic Christian High School of which I am the principal; and as a mother and grandmother.
Our mission for the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union is to educate youth on the dangers of marijuana and other drugs.  We go to health fairs, county fairs, street fairs, festivals, schools, and any place we are invited to give out informative literature and to give demonstrations on the dangers of drugs.
In my school I have seen firsthand the results of students addicted to marijuana—lack of initiative, unable to concentrate, and lethargic.  I teach quite often in my school on drug addiction.
As a mother of 9 and grandmother of 20 I have spent much time and effort educating my own children on drug dangers, both legal and illegal. I would hate to see all this work and effort done away by allowing the medical marijuana clinic into our town.
Getting a medical marijuana card is as simple as telling a doctor your back hurts and immediately, without an exam of any kind, you are given a card.  It has been documented that the biggest percent of customers at the clinics are young people in their early 20’s.  We are not ignorant of the fact that most people in their 20’s do not need marijuana for medical purposes, nor are we ignorant of the fact that marijuana is a ‘gateway’ drug that leads to even more addictive drugs.
Please, council members, I urge you in the strongest terms I can use, do not grant a permit for a clinic to come into our town.  As council members you took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States.  Part of that oath you took said you promise to “ insure domestic tranquility… and to promote the general welfare… for ourselves and our posterity”.  If you allow this clinic to come in, I believe you will have TAKEN AN ACTION THAT VIOLATES THE CONSTITUTION AND NULLIFIES YOUR OATH.
Linda Hamby
PS:  The council denied the permit so I feel that WCTU had a positive input.
